What You Can & Can’t Do on a Party Bus

Drinking? Yes. Smoking? No. Now is your chance to find out more about what you can and can’t do on a party bus in Los Angeles. By knowing the rules, you can just sit back and enjoy the ride!

The Rules for Drinking on a Party Bus

There’s a reason party buses are so popular. Yes, you get to ride in style and don’t have to worry about a designated driver. You can also drink on a party bus in Los Angeles—if you’re 21 years of age or older. Even though state and federal laws prohibit open containers of alcohol in motor vehicles, this does not apply to party buses. It also doesn’t apply to charter buses, limousines, and minibuses.

You can drink as a passenger on a party bus, but you must be over the age of 21. If any underage passengers are on board, they must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 25 years old. Underage drinking is not allowed on a party bus under any circumstances.

Sorry, No Smoking Allowed

Smoking cigarettes is legal on party buses and in other motor vehicles, but at Party Bus LA we prefer for our passengers to avoid smoking on our buses. The enclosed space can make it uncomfortable for other passengers and our drivers as well. However, we’ll be happy to stop for smoke breaks if you need them!

With the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in California in 2016, some party bus companies allowed marijuana use by passengers, but this came to an end fairly quickly. In 2019 lawmakers officially prohibited marijuana use on commercial party buses. Even if the driver was sealed off, it was asserted that they could still be affected by marijuana smoke. So, unless things change again (which they might), there is no smoking marijuana on party buses in Los Angeles or anywhere in California.

Stand Up & Dance!

There is no specific law prohibiting party bus passengers from standing up, making some noise, and dancing while the vehicle is in motion. You are allowed to sing, move around, and dance as much as you want to, but you should still be careful. Utilize handholds where available and sit down if you notice that the ride is becoming a bit too bumpy.

Some Things to Consider

Part of taking a party bus is enjoying the fact that you can relinquish some responsibility for a while. And although you should have fun, be aware of your surroundings and try to watch out for the people you’re with as well. If someone has had too much to drink, try to encourage them to slow down. Make sure you don’t pour the drinks too strong on the bus and keep everyone hydrated. Snacks are also a great way to avoid getting too drunk too quickly.
